Like with any window, installation is key in ensuring your skylight is energy efficient. Here are our best tips for making sure it is as efficient as possible:
- Add Insulation. Most skylights and sun tunnels have a shaft that stretches into unconditioned attics. Adding insulation to your attic helps ensure you don’t lose heat during the winter or air conditioning in the summer.
- Consider Placement. Installing your’s on a roof facing North provides just the right amount of light without overheating or cooling your room.
- Evaluate The Specifications: Choosing a double or triple pane glass with a low UV value gets you the most energy efficient option on the market.
- Blinds and vents: Skylights come with options for blinds and options for opening allowing you to control how much light you want or what time of the day/year you want light versus ventilation.
Research Government Rebates Before Buying.
Look into available government rebates before purchasing and scheduling your skylight installation. There are often rebates for solar applications. For instance, if we install a skylight and hook it into a solar motor to operate the skylight and the shade, you may be eligible to receive a 30% tax credit.
What’s The Difference Between A Sunlight And A Sun Tunnel?
Many people believe sun tunnels and skylights are the same things, but they are quite different. A sun tunnel is a tubular shaft that is typically much smaller than a traditional skylight.
